Finnish artist HUGO SIMBERG's painting "Dancing Death" is dated 1899 but speaks to the global issues of 2020 and 2021. In researching her book, entitled Artists of the Ateneum: Hugo Simberg, Dr. Marja Lahelma found suggestions that the artist was aware as a young man that he had an incurable disease and would probably face an untimely death. As she writes, “Perhaps he was trying to become more familiar with the idea of death and that would explain why his portrayal of death is very different from that of other artists.”
